France-based Luko is a digital homeowners insurance provider that offers coverage within minutes through an online process and enables customers to file claims via chat, phone or video call using its mobile app. The company’s operating model is similar to Lemonade’s where any unclaimed premiums are donated to a charity of the customer’s choosing. Luko also offers smart home devices such as door sensors, electricity consumption monitors, and water leak sensors to proactively identify risks as well as advise policyholders on optimal usage patterns.
Luko acquired German insurtech startup Coya (renamed to Luko Insurance AG) in an all-equity transaction in January 2022 . Furthermore, Luko was to leverage the latter’s German insurance license to expand its footprint in the European market.
In January 2024, Luko entered into an agreement with Allianz Direct, the digital insurance subsidiary of Allianz, to sell off its French insurance business for EUR 4.3 million (~USD 4.7 million). This follows after the failed acquisition of the same by Admiral in June 2023.
The company continues to operate in the digital homeowners insurance market in Spain and Germany, while also maintaining its real estate holdings in France.
Funding and financials
The company raised EUR 50 million (USD 60 million) in Series B funding in December 2020. The round was led by EQT Ventures, along with participation from existing investors Accel, Founders Fund, and Speedinvest. Assaf Wand, the co-founder of Hippo Insurance, also participated in this round.
