Founded in 2016 by Felix Ohswald and Gregor Mueller, GoStudent operates an online tutoring platform offering live, individual, and group sessions. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) to match tutors with students and offers a free social homework chat for students to discuss their questions with others.
GoStudent focuses on building infrastructure that allows educators to focus on teaching. As of September 2021, the platform had about 5,500 tutors, a customer base of about 15,000, and around 420,000 monthly sessions booked.
Since early Summer 2020, it has expanded beyond the DACH region (comprising Austria, Germany, and Switzerland) to other European countries including France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Spain. In January 2021, GoStudent announced its plans to expand to England, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and the Netherlands in Q1 2021 as part of its ongoing European expansion. The company also plans to open its third international office in Madrid (in addition to Vienna and Lyon) in the near future. In May 2021, the platform launched in Russia in what was its first expansion beyond Western Europe ahead of a debut in Mexico, Canada, and Poland during the summer of 2021. With a presence in 18 countries as of June 2021, GoStudent plans to expand its services to 20 countries and expand its tutor base to more than 10,000 by the end of 2021.
In September 2021, GoStudent acquired FoxEducation Services, the company behind the SchoolFox app, a communication platform that connects teachers with students and parents, which it will add to its range of services. The platform provides a range of tools such as messenger services, a learning management system (LMS), cloud storage, video lessons, and class chats for over 5,000 schools in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. In February 2022, the company acquired Seneca Learning, a UK algorithmic learning content provider, and Tus Media Group, a Spanish open tutoring marketplace, for an undisclosed amount, allowing GoStudent to expand its product portfolio, entering the learning content and open tutoring spaces. Its most recent acquisition was in December 2022, when it acquired Studienkreis, a Germany-based blended learning and online tutoring service provider, to strengthen GoStudent's hybrid learning strategy by combining Studienkreis’ center-based tutoring services with its online learning materials.
Funding and financials
In August 2023, the company raised USD 95 million in a funding round led by Deutsche Bank to advance its hybrid learning approach and AI integration, particularly in the DACH region. Previously, GoStudent raised EUR 300 million (~USD 340 million) in a Series D funding round in January 2022, led by new investor Prosus, valuing the company at EUR 3 billion (USD 3.5 billion). The round follows the EUR 205 million Series C round in June 2021, when the company achieved unicorn status at a valuation of EUR 1.4 billion (USD 1.7 billion).
