Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT), a Halifax-based startup spun out of Dalhousie University in 2017, offers sustainable coating solutions for marine shipping vessels. The company's graphene-based, eco-friendly marine coatings are designed to help vessel owners and operators increase fuel efficiency, reduce drag, and optimize a vessel's hydrodynamics and performance. Unlike traditional marine coatings, GIT's products do not leach toxins or microplastics into bodies of water.
GIT's coatings are formulated with ocean-safe materials and can absorb underwater radiant noise, reducing stress on sensitive marine life and ecosystems. Additionally, these coatings can be applied across a wider temperature range, extending the coating season. In 2020, Transport Canada awarded GIT a contract to work on a USD 2.4 million project aimed at reducing noise levels and GHG emissions from small inshore fishing boats.
