Based in California, Huue develops bio-based dyes for denims using microbes. The company uses an enzymatic digestion process that uses microbes to convert sugar into dye, and claims that its process mimics how colors are produced in nature. The company is initially developing indigo-blue dyes for denims claiming to offer a similar performance to conventionally produced dyes and is also compatible with existing denim manufacturing processes while reducing toxic chemical usage such as cyanide and formaldehyde by 5x. Huue states that its dyes can also have applications in the food and beverage and the personal care industries in the future. As of June 2024, Huue has not commercialized its product and is still in the product development stage.
Key customers and partnerships
The company partnered with Massachusetts-based cell programming platform Ginkgo Bioworks in August 2021 to leverage Ginkgo's platform to optimize microbe strains and planned to accelerate production of its dyes for its partners in 2021 and 2022. In October 2023, the company partnered with AGI Denim to use Huue Indigo to dye denim and jeans.
Funding and financials
In July 2022, Huue raised USD 14.6 million in Series A funding, led by Material Impact VC, to launch commercial pilot projects and scale up production with partnered denim manufacturers.
