Nokia Corporation (NYSE: NOK) is a Finnish multinational telecommunications, information technology, and consumer electronics company, founded in 1865 and headquartered in Espoo, Finland.
Nokia has transformed itself multiple times over its long history, starting as a paper mill before expanding into rubber and cable production in the early 20th century. In the 1960s, Nokia began moving into electronics and telecommunications. The company rose to global prominence in the 1990s and 2000s as the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, at one point controlling over 40% of the global mobile phone market.
After losing market share to smartphone rivals in the late 2000s, Nokia sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2014. The company then refocused on telecommunications infrastructure, becoming a major provider of 5G network equipment. In 2023, Nokia's Network Infrastructure segment generated revenue of 8.04 billion euros.
Today, Nokia operates through four main business segments: Mobile Networks, Network Infrastructure, Cloud and Network Services, and Nokia Technologies (patent licensing). As of 2023, Nokia had approximately 86,700 employees across 130 countries. The company reported net sales of 22.26 billion euros in 2023.
Nokia continues to invest heavily in research and development, spending 4.33 billion euros on R&D in 2023. The company is focusing on 5G networks, cloud-native software, and enterprise solutions as key growth areas. Nokia aims to be a leader in technologies that "sense, think and act" across mobile, fixed and cloud networks.
