Commons (formerly Joro) offers a mobile app that calculates the carbon footprint of a user based on their credit or debit card spending data. Once a user connects their card to the app, its “Carbonizer” software ties individual spending data to national-level carbon intensity data to estimate a carbon footprint.
Users can also offset their carbon footprint by financing carbon offset projects selected by the company. A typical Commons user spends around USD 25 per month on carbon offset and the company takes a 19% fee for its service.
Funding and financials
The company’s most recent funding round was in October 2022, when it raised USD 10 million in a Series A funding round co-led by Sequoia Capital and Amasia. Previously, in December 2020, Commons raised USD 2.5 million in a seed round led by Sequoia Capital.
