Cloudera is a data infrastructure and analytics company that operates a hybrid data platform for modern data architectures. The Cloudera Data Platform provides a variety of capabilities related to and including data flows, stream processing, data engineering, data warehousing, operational databases, machine learning, and data hubs, and aims to provide a single platform for data management across multi-cloud and on-premise environments, with a focus on interoperability and cost-effectiveness. The Cloudera Shared Data Experience (SDX) enables unified security and governance across open and cloud-native storage formats.

Cloudera initially began as a distributor and developer of the Hadoop data processing platform but has evolved to offer a range of proprietary data management products and services.

In June 2024, the company acquired Verta, a machine-learning infrastructure company. Cloudera planned on enhancing its AI capabilities by integrating Verta's Operational AI platform, as well as retain its workforce, which could help the company further expand its AI capabilities.

Key customers and partnerships

Cloudera’s customer list spans multiple segments across financial services, telecommunications, the public sector, retail and consumer goods, insurance, manufacturing, and healthcare and life sciences, and as of November 2023, includes names such as Regions Bank, Zain, The New Yorker, Transamerica, Vodafone, and Rush University Medical Center.

The company has partnered with numerous notable global companies to provide integrated data solutions and enhanced capabilities, including AWS, IBM, and Kyndryl, as of November 2023.

Funding and financials

The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in April 2017, raising USD 225 million at a valuation of ~USD 2.3 billion—significantly down from its previous valuation. In 2018, Cloudera merged with another Hadoop platform vendor, Hortonworks, in a deal worth USD 5.2 billion, and in 2021 agreed to be taken private in a deal valued at ~USD 5.3 billion by equity firms KKR and Clayton, Dublier, & Rice (CD&R).
