Plant-based plastic and textile fiber manufacturer Genomatica and Unilever have jointly invested USD 120 million to launch a joint venture (JV) for the commercialization of plant-based alternatives to palm oil and fossil fuel-based cleansing ingredients.
The JV will use Genomatica’s biotechnology platform to develop a plant-based feedstock alternative for application in the home and personal care market. The feedstock will be used to produce bio-based cleaning and personal care products that can lather and lift dirt.
Based on initial estimates, companies can reportedly reduce their carbon footprint by using Genomatica’s bio-based feedstocks (50% use). Genomatica also reported that it is starting to scale up the biotechnology process to produce plant-based feedstocks.
For Unilever, this is reportedly its largest investment in bio-based alternatives to palm-oil and fossil fuel-based feedstocks. The JV is also expected to support Unilever in diversifying its supply chains and offer its customers sustainable alternatives.
