Climeworks, a Swiss direct air capture (DAC) startup, has begun operations at Mammoth, the company’s second commercial DAC and storage plant and its 18th project.
Iceland-based Mammoth will capture 36,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per annum. ON Power’s Hellisheiði electricity power plant will supply renewable energy to Mammoth and Carbfix’s natural mineralization process—Climeworks’ carbon sequestration partner.
The construction of the new plant is expected to last nearly 18–24 months, prior to operationalization.

Analyst QuickTake : Mammoth is the world’s largest DAC and storage plant to permanently remove CO2 from ambient air, followed by Orca . The new plant is nearly 10x the size of Orca. The proceeds from Climeworks’ CHF 600 million (USD 650 million) equity funding during April 2022 will also be utilized for the deployment of its DAC facilities.
