Origin Materials partners with Intertex to commercialize carbon-negative carbon black

Partnerships

 • Origin Materials, a carbon-negative materials manufacturer, has partnered with Ohio-based synthetic rubber, carbon black, process oils, and rubber chemical distributor Intertex to develop and commercialize carbon-negative black for the rubber compounding and plastic masterbatch industries.

 • As per the partnership, Intertex has signed an offtake agreement for the purchase of sustainable carbon black to produce tires (including the N660, N550, and N762), belts, hoses, rubber seals, plastic extrusion, and other mechanical rubber goods. Origin Materials will develop carbon black using its proprietary bio-based hydrothermal carbon (HTC) resin made from sustainably sourced wood residues.

Analyst QuickTake: This partnership follows Origin Materials’ partnership with Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings (MCHG) in April 2022 to develop bio-based carbon-black to produce tires for the latter. The company’s signed offtake agreements have increased by 7x since it went public, reaching USD 7.4 billion as of May 2022, and are expected to increase further amidst its latest partnerships with Intertex and Kuraray .
