The proposed ban on using meat-like terminology for plant-based meats in France, which was slated to come into effect in October 2022, has now been suspended after careful consideration of its legality by The French Conseil d’Etat, the highest court in France.
The suspension on Decree No. 2022-947 was brought upon after Protéines France, with the support of ACCRO, HappyVore, La Vie, NUTRITION & SAINTE, Olga, and Umiami, lodged an urgent application for interim relief.
The interim judge ruled that there was an impossibility for operators to comply due to the number of steps and scale that would be required, such as the development of new names and branding by the date which the decree was supposed to come into action.
