Flutterwave secures Switching and Processing License from Central Bank of Nigeria

Regulation/policy

 • Flutterwave, a Nigeria- and US-based payment infrastructure provider, has obtained the Switching and Processing License from the Central Bank of Nigeria, which allows it to circumvent intermediaries that were needed under the Payment Solution Service Provider (PSSP) and International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO) licenses (through which Flutterwave operated).

 • The new license opens the door for Flutterwave to launch new products and services, as it allows the company to offer transaction switching and card processing services and participate in agency banking and in non-bank acquiring.

Analyst quicktake: The news comes just a few months after the Central Bank of Kenya directed all financial institutions to cease doing business with Flutterwave. Moreover, Flutterwave raised USD 250 million in Series D funding in February this year and noted that the funds were to be partially invested in product developments, including complementary products. This new license should support the company’s product development efforts.
