Desktop Metal introduces Figur G15–a platform based on Digital Sheet Forming (DSF) technology for sheet metal fabrication

  • Desktop Metal, a seller of 3D printers and related products, has introduced Figur G15–a printer platform based on patent-pending Digital Sheet Forming (DSF) technology that fabricates sheet metal into parts with a high level of surface finish with little to no post-printing.

  • DSF uses a software-driven ceramic tool head to form large metal sheets layer by layer with up to 2,000 lbs of force. Without using custom forming tools, molds dyes, or presses the technology can process sheets with a maximum size of 1,600 x 1,200 mm to make parts with a draw depth up to 400 mm in the vertical Z direction. It can also process sheets of varying thicknesses–steel up to 2.0 mm and aluminum up to 2.5 mm.

  • Desktop Metal is currently taking orders for the new system on the website which will also be demonstrated at IMTS 2022 during September 12–17.

<ul><li> Analyst QuickTake: Desktop Metal, the highest funded company in the additive manufacturing space, continues to expand its product portfolio. This new introduction – reportedly the first commercial system of this nature – expands its capabilities in the AM space by offering new technology that can directly fabricate metal sheets, compared to methods offered by other companies that require materials in powder or liquid forms. The fact that it also requires little to no post-printing will offer greater convenience to customers. Desktop Metal also recently upgraded its metal binder jetting Shop System and the Live Sinter software to offer convenience and cost advantages to customers.</ul>
