Sulapac partners with Schwan Cosmetics to develop bio-based packaging for cosmetic pencils

Partnerships

 • Sulapac, a Finnish bioplastic packaging startup, and Schwan Cosmetics, a German multinational developer and producer of cosmetic pencils, have partnered to launch a plant-based enclosing barrel called the “BetterBarrel” for the latter’s cosmetic pencils and eyeliners.

 • BetterBarrel is made from Sulapac’s “Flow v1.8” material which uses plant-based binders and residual sawdust from industrial side streams. The BetterBarrel reportedly contains up to 72% bio-based content without compromising on performance, quality, or style compared to plastic. This is also the first time Sulapac’s materials have been used in cosmetic color pencils.

Analyst QuickTake: This partnership adds to the list of cosmetic brands Sulapac has partnered with to commercialize its bio-based packaging material. Other cosmetic brands the company has partnered with include CHANEL, to design a bio-based fragrance and beauty cream bottle cap; Quadpack, to develop its Nordic Collection; and Lumene, to develop packaging for its water-based skincare products.
