Brazilian company JBS, a world leader in processed meats, announced the shutting down of its US plant-based meat division Planterra (producers of OZO brand) including a 189,000 sq foot production facility in Denver, Colorado.
The company stated it will remain active in plant-based meat operations but will focus on Brazilian and European markets which are gaining traction amongst its consumer base and expanding market share. Further, JBS is actively working on employing Planterra employees at other JBS locations.
Analyst QuickTake: JBS is the latest in line to shut down or alter its plant-based operations amidst unfavorable market conditions. In August 2022, Canada’s Maple Leaf Foods reduced its Greenleaf Foods plant-based division by 25% while Beyond Meat laid off 40 employees in a cost-cutting move.
