Wing, the drone delivery division operated by Google, partnered with DoorDash to offer drone-based food deliveries to the latter’s customers in Queensland, Australia.
Initially, the service will be introduced in nine communities in Logan, Queensland with plans to expand operational reach to include other areas that Wing operates in Australia in the future.
As per the deal, DoorDash’s customers will have the option in the DoorDash app to order food to be delivered by drones with an expected delivery time of 15 minutes or less. This marks the first time Wing offers its services via a third-party marketplace app instead of its app—a move the company is reportedly planning to promote to support growth.
Analyst QuickTake: Google’s Wing has been conducting drone-based deliveries in Australia since 2014, which later expanded to include the US, Finland, and Ireland. The company announced completing 250,000+ commercial deliveries earlier this year—mostly in Australia where its primary operations are. Today’s partnership will help further strengthen the company’s position as a drone-based delivery provider in Australia and will add DoorDash to its list of existing partners such as supermarket chain Coles, and restaurant chain KFC. On a separate note, automating last-mile delivery has not been entirely new to DoorDash either. In fact, the company previously collaborated with General Motors’ Cruise and Starship Technologies to test autonomous delivery vehicles (ADVs) and droids in California.
