Believer Meats (formerly Future Meat Technologies), an Israeli producer of cultivated meats, announced breaking ground of a 200,000 sq foot cultivated meat production facility in Wilson, North Carolina, with an initially planned investment of USD 123.35 million.
Claimed to be the largest cultivation meat facility in the world, it has the capacity to produce at least 10,000 metric tons (~22 million lbs) annually with the possibility of expansion in the future. Believer Meats will also be creating 100+ new jobs over the period of 3-4 years along with this facility.
Apart from using proprietary custom-made bioreactors capable of achieving high cell densities and yield, the facility will also house an R&D innovation center, tasting kitchen, offices, and conference rooms.
Analyst QuickTake: Believer Meats raised USD 347 million in a Series B funding round over a year ago with funds being funneled for accelerating production plans in the US. With the FDA granting its first ever “no questions” letter in the field of cultivated meat to UPSIDE Food thereby marking a major step towards a new era in cell-cultured meat production, this facility could act as a potential game changer for the company. Compared with other large players such as UPSIDE Foods and Steakholder Foods, this expansion in capacity is leaps ahead of what is currently available.
