Form Energy, a long-duration energy storage startup, has partnered with Xcel Energy, a company involved in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity in the US. Under this partnership, Form Energy will deploy its iron-air battery systems at two of Xcel Energy’s retiring coal plant sites to integrate more low-cost, renewable energy into Xcel’s system and maintain reliability as it retires the coal plants.
As such, Xcel Energy will deploy two 10 MW multi-day storage systems: one at the Sherburne County Generating Station in Becker, Minnesota, and the other at the Comanche Generating Station in Pueblo, Colorado. Both projects are expected to become operational in 2025.
Analyst QuickTake: In December 2022 , Form Energy partnered with the State of West Virginia to build its first iron-air battery manufacturing facility. The company will be investing USD 760 million to build the facility on a 55-acre property located in Weirton, West Virginia. The company expects to begin construction of the facility in 2023, following which it will begin manufacturing iron-air battery systems for commercialization in 2024.
