Chinese cell-cultured meat startup, CellX, has partnered with Shanghai-based science and technology firm, Tofflon, to construct China's first pilot production facility for cultivated meats.
The partnership plans to leverage CellX's expertise in cultivated meats, Tofflon's biological equipment, and production capabilities to scale CellX's cultivated meat production using suspension cell lines in serum-free media. Furthermore, they plan to develop new equipment and build facilities worldwide for the production of cultivated meat.
This new facility—slated to be operational within a year—will bring together R&D, pilot production, and public tasting under one roof and will feature 1,000-liter bioreactors equipped with Tofflon's intelligent management systems.
Analyst QuickTake: In January 2022 , China included cultivated meat and other future foods in its five-year agricultural plan, indicating cultivated meat as one of China’s national interests, making it a favorable environment for cultivated meat production. With developments like serum-free media and single cell line suspension, CellX’s partnership to scale up production is aptly timed where regulations seem to be gradually easing globally for the cell-cultured meat industry.
