GOOD Meat, a subsidiary of Eat Just, Inc. announced it has received a “no questions” letter from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US. The letter means that following a careful and rigorous evaluation, the FDA has accepted the company’s conclusion that its first poultry product, cultivated chicken, is safe to eat. However, it is only a pre-market consultation and the company will work with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to gather the remaining approvals required for commercialization.
The news comes more than two years after GOOD Meat received regulatory approval from Singapore Food Agency, followed by its commercial launch in Singapore. The US is only the second country to create a regulatory pathway to sell meat produced directly from animal cells.
Following necessary approvals from USDA, GOOD Meat’s chicken will first be available to customers at a restaurant operated by José Andrés Group in Washington, D.C. José Andrés Group operates more than 30 restaurants across the US.
Analyst Quick-Take: Eat Just’s GOOD Meat is currently the only company selling cultured meat to consumers. With this latest approval, the company becomes the first to receive regulatory clearance on multiple continents. Furthermore, the US represents one of the largest commercial opportunities in cultured meat and this move is a crucial step in the commercialization of cultured meat in the country. GOOD meat became the second company to receive clearance from the FDA, months after California-based cell-cultured meat company UPSIDE Foods became the first to receive a “no questions” letter from the FDA.
