Anaergia, a TSX-listed waste-to-energy company, has agreed to provide technologies that will enable Monterey One Water, the wastewater utility of northern Monterey County, California, to create renewable energy from food waste and wastewater.
This partnership will provide organic waste receiving and pre-processing equipment and expand the anaerobic digestion capacity at Monterey One Water’s regional treatment plant. As such, the food waste will be co-digested in existing digesters currently used to process wastewater biosolids. When anaerobically digested, the waste will produce renewable biogas which will be used to generate electricity and heat at the plant.
The project increases biogas production at the facility by over 150% and will produce up to 1.6 MW of energy, which is adequate to power the plant. The project is expected to begin in Q2 2023 and be completed by Q3 2024.
Analyst QuickTake: Prior to this in February 2023 , Anaergia sold its Envo Biogas plant in Tønder, Denmark, to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ Advanced Bioenergy Fund I. The facility began providing biomethane for Danish pipelines in November 2022 and, when fully operational, is expected to become one of Europe’s largest biogas plants, processing up to 900,000 tons of organic waste. Anaergia planned to use the funds gained from the sale to facilitate growth, primarily in Italy and Germany.
