UPSIDE Foods (formerly Memphis Meats), a cultivated meat producer, has received label approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for its cultivated chicken, and it is working toward obtaining a grant of inspection (GOI) for its Engineering, Production, and Innovation Center (EPIC).
Having demonstrated full compliance with the pre-market regulatory process, the GOI will pave the way for the commercial production and sale of cultivated meat. Upon a successful GOI, UPSIDE Foods will launch its cultivated chicken product in limited quantities through select foodservice partners.
Moreover, the company will continue to work closely with the FDA and USDA to bring its cultivated sausages, nuggets, and dumplings to market.
AnalystQuickTake: UPSIDE Foods was just the second cultivated meat company to receive USDA approval, following GOOD Meat (subsidiary of Eat JUST), which obtained the approval earlier this month. To date, UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat remain the only cultivated meat companies to have received “no questions” letters from the FDA, while GOOD Meat is the only company with regulatory clearance on multiple continents.
