ESS, an NYSE-listed long-duration iron flow battery developer, has signed an agreement with LEAG, a German energy provider, to deploy renewable generation and long-duration energy storage (LDES) using ESS iron flow battery technology.
Under this partnership, the two companies aim to construct a 50 MW iron flow battery system at LEAG’s Boxberg power plant site in Germany. The system will be commissioned in 2027 and will be part of LEAG’s plans to transform its power plant locations to 7–14 GW of renewable generation, paired with 2–3 GWh of energy storage.
Analyst QuickTake: ESS also partnered with Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in January 2023 to support its sustainability efforts. As such, ESS agreed to provide its Energy Warehouse solution for a pilot project that is testing the retirement of diesel generators at the airport. Overall, the company has deployed its LDES systems in several commercial microgrid systems and has utility-scale projects underway in the US and Australia.
