Netherlands to greenlight cultivated meat tastings

Industry news

  • The Netherlands is set to permit tastings of cultivated meat, a significant development for the country known as the birthplace of this technology. The first official tasting is slated for later this year.

  • Despite being the pioneer of cultivated meats, consumption, sale, and tasting are prohibited in the Netherlands, with companies having to use computer data to taste prototypes.

  • In 2022, a motion to allow the tasting of cultivated meat was passed in the House of Representatives, with Cabinet endorsement expected soon.

  • AnalystQuickTake: While the legalization of tasting in the Netherlands is a milestone for the country, the regulatory approval for the commercial sale of cultivated meat in Europe is a lengthier process, involving risk assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and approval from the European Commission and member states. European authorities may be exploring more innovative approaches to regulation, as seen with recent events and the US approval for Upside Foods and GOOD Meat .
