France to ban meat-like terminology for alternative meat products in new attempt

Regulation/policy

  • France has submitted a revised proposal to ban the usage of meat-like terminology for plant-based meat products, highlighting their desire to avoid misleading claims.

  • The new decree bans the usage of 21 specific terminology, including steak, escalope, spare ribs, ham, and butcher, and will only apply to plant-based meat products made and sold in France.

  • On the other hand, over 120 terms, such as cooked ham, poultry, sausage, and bacon, will be authorized, given the plant-protein percentage does not cross the threshold of 0.5% and 6%.

  • Analyst QuickTake : While France has been trying vehemently to impose such restrictions, several US states, including Kansas, Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas, have successfully passed similar legislation. If the new decree passes, it will create a complex situation. The suspension of the initial decree and the subsequent French government-backed plant-based project have generated conflicting signals.
