UK government to expedite approval process for cultivated meat

Regulation/policy
Partnerships

  • UK ministers and regulators seek to expedite the approval process of lab-grown meat and consider omitting unnecessary steps to simplify the approval process for cultivated meat companies in the UK.

  • Further, the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the UK’s regulatory body for novel foods, plans to sign a bilateral agreement with Israel to foster cooperation in the novel foods sector and aid in its bid to fast-track approvals.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The lengthy approval process, which on average takes 18 months, is one of the main barriers to commercialization for UK cultivated meat companies. Aleph Farms is the only company to have submitted for approval in the UK , while in the US, Upside Foods and Good Meat have already begun commercial sales . If implemented successfully, this initiative could help the UK become a preferred market for lab-grown meat.
