BMW receives approval to test Level 3 automated driving functions in Shanghai

Regulation/policy

  • German multinational automaker BMW has received approval from the Chinese authorities to test SAE Level 3 automated driving features in designated highways and expressways in Shanghai, where the driver is not required to maintain full vigilance (a hands-free and eyes-off driving system) but must be able to take control if necessary.

  • Today’s approval complements its previous license obtained in 2018 that allowed testing on a 3.5-mile stretch of public roads.

  • Analyst QuickTake: With today’s permit, BMW becomes the second international automaker after General Motors (GM) to receive such a permit to test autonomous/automated driving in Shanghai. BMW’s Level 3 automated driving feature was also approved by German regulators, and it is planning to introduce the system via the BMW 7 Series in March 2024.
