British biotech company Multus has unveiled what it claims to be the first large-scale production plant making serum-free growth media in the cultivated meat industry.
The company produces Proliferum M, a fetal bovine serum (FBS)-free growth media designed for large-scale use in the food industry. Furthermore, it has received ISO 22000 certification in line with food safety standards.
Analyst QuickTake: The construction of this facility was backed by Multus’ GBP 7.9 million (~USD 9.6 million) funding round. FBS is an ingredient that has brought on ethical concerns and driven up production prices for cell-cultured meat. The availability of outsourced serum-free growth media production could allow companies to focus more on product development and accelerate innovation.
