French Supreme Court rules in favor of plant-based meat in labeling dispute

Regulation/policy

  • The French Supreme Court ruled in favor of Nutrition & Santé Group (owner of Gerblé, Céréal, ValpiBio, and Valpiform) after a five-year legal battle against meat lobby Interbev, who alleged that plant-based labels with meat-like terminology caused consumer confusion.

  • The court affirmed a lack of evidence to support the allegations and that consumers can differentiate between different categories of meat given clear and indicative packaging and labeling.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This ruling is a significant step in the fight against the proposed ban on using meat-related terms for alternative meats by the French Government. The French Conseil d'Etat (Council of State) is awaiting guidance from the European Court of Justice before issuing a final verdict.
