Multinational technology company Apple has reportedly scaled back its plans to enter the automotive market with a self-driving passenger vehicle in its project dubbed “Titan.” The company will now focus on an electric vehicle (EV) with basic driver assistance features. The anticipated launch has also been delayed to 2028, two years later than planned.
The vehicle's self-driving capabilities have been scaled back from the highest level of full automation (Level 5) to a more limited form of automation (Level 2+), which includes basic features like lane centering and braking/accelerating assistance but still requires the driver's constant attention.
The company is also in talks with potential European manufacturing partners regarding this new strategy.
Analyst QuickTake: Project Titan underwent several changes since its inception in the mid-2010s. The company first pushed back the vehicle's launch to 2026, from 2025 in December 2022 , and also announced the scaling back of the car features to include advanced driver assistance (ADAS) technologies, shifting away from its planned full self-driving vehicle. Apple also removed 56 drivers (about 25% of the pool) from its self-driving car pilot program in May 2023.
