Moonshot AI raises USD 1 billion in new funding round

Funding

  • Moonshot AI, a Chinese AI startup known in Chinese as "Yuezhi Anmian," has raised over USD 1 billion in a funding round led by Alibaba Group, with participation from venture capital firm HongShan. This values the company at ~USD 2.5 billion.

  • The specific use of the funds was not disclosed.

  • Based in China, Moonshot AI launched its smart chatbot, Kimi Chat, in October 2023. The chatbot is built on an in-house large language model (LLM) named "Moonshot." The model can process as many as 200,000 Chinese characters in a context window. 

  • This marks the largest single financing for a Chinese AI firm since the November 2022 launch of ChatGPT, and with this, the company joins the likes of other Chinese GenAI unicorns, including 01.AI and Baichuan Intelligence .
