UMAMI Bioworks, a Singaporean company specializing in cultivated seafood, has merged with Shiok Meats, a specialist in cell-cultured crustaceans such as shrimp, crab, and lobster, to advance production and expedite the commercial viability of cultivated seafood.
The merger will leverage UMAMI’s automated cell-cultivation platform and Shiok Meats’ crustacean cell cultivation expertise to boost market efficiency, enhance commercial prospects, and expedite regulatory approvals. The new company is headed by UMAMI Bioworks CEO Mihir Pershad and supported by Hatch Blue and Aqua Sparks.
Analyst QuickTake: Both companies are based in Singapore, which was the first nation to approve the commercial sale of cultivated meats. Shiok Meats has previously partnered with Vietnam’s largest conventional shrimp producer and exporter, Minh Phu Seafood, and Switzerland-based Mirai Foods to develop cultivated meat and seafood products for the Asian market.
