Vital Meat files for regulatory approval for cultivated chicken in UK

Regulation/policy

  • Vital Meat, a French cultivated meat startup, has filed for UK regulatory approval with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland, seeking permission to commercialize its cultivated chicken products. The company has also submitted for pre-market approval with the Singapore Food Agency, targeting a 2025 launch.

  • Vital Meat utilizes pharmaceutical technology to transform chicken cells from fertilized eggs into lab-grown meat. The company claims it does not use antibiotics or other controversial ingredients like fetal bovine serum or other animal products in its production process.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Following  Aleph Farms , Vital Meat has become the second company to apply for regulatory approval in the UK. As this process currently takes 18–24 months, the UK Government is working to expedite and streamline the process.
