May Mobility, a developer of autonomous shuttle services, has partnered with Detroit's Office of Mobility Innovation and the Michigan Mobility Collaborative to launch the "Accessibili-D" shuttle service. This service aims to improve transportation accessibility for residents over the age of 62 and those with disabilities. This pilot in Detroit marks the company's 14th autonomous vehicle deployment.
The service will commence later this month and continue through 2026, featuring autonomous vehicles (AVs) that include wheelchair-accessible options. It will be free across a network of 68 stops in an 11 sq mi area of downtown Detroit, offering weekday and weekend schedules.
Detroit City Council supported this initiative with a USD 2.4 million contract to May Mobility in July 2023.
Analyst QuickTake: May Mobility has a history of collaborating with cities and authorities on autonomous vehicle pilot programs. Other initiatives include ones with the Contra Costa Transportation Authority and The Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the City of Arlington, and the City of Grand Rapids.
