Carbios, a biotech firm that recycles PET plastics and polyester fibers using an enzymatic process, and TOMRA Textiles, a venture by TOMRA, an advanced collection and sorting systems provider, have partnered to boost textile recycling in Northern Europe.
The two companies plan to establish a chain from textile waste collection to recycling using CARBIOS' enzymatic depolymerization technology. They hope to redirect post-consumer polyester waste for bio recycling, and the recycled materials will be made into r-PET fiber for the textile industry. This collaboration aims to increase the current 1% textile-to-textile recycling rate, promoting a more sustainable alternative to incineration or landfill for polyester-based textiles.
Analyst QuickTake: Carbios, whose initial focus was on recycling PET, launched a textile preparation line in October 2023 , breaking ground on a PET and polyester bio-recycling plant in April 2024 . In February 2024 , the company partnered with Landbell Group to use bio-recycling technology for PET and textile waste.
