Protein Industries Canada (PIC), an industry-led, non-profit organization, announced a new consortium comprising Lovingly Made Flour Mills, TMRW Foods, and Dutton Farms to advance the development of pea and fava protein ingredients.
The project is worth a total of CAD 7.7 million (~USD 5.6 million), of which PIC would contribute CAD 3.3 million (~USD 2.4 million). The project aims to create a value-chain feedback loop and improve the affordability and nutrition of protein ingredients as well as its manufacturing industry in Canada.
Under the project, Dutton Farms and Lovingly Made will explore the best pea and fava varieties for processing and extrusion in order to improve the processing methods and develop texturized protein ingredients for Lovingly Made. TMRW Foods will then test them and use Dutton Farms’ varieties to extrude its protein ingredients for new meat alternative products for Canadian and international markets.
Analyst QuickTake: This is the third venture PIC has embarked on this year with the goal of advancing the production of sustainable protein ingredients and alternatives. In March 2024 , it launched a CAD 6.9 million (~USD 5.1 million) project to enhance novel plant-based ingredients, followed by the recent initiation of a CAD 24.5 million (~USD 17.9 million) plant-based food expansion project.
