Formlabs, a provider of 3D printing technology, has acquired Micronics, a 3D printer startup, for an undisclosed amount.
Micronics develops SLS 3D printers that direct high-powered lasers at resin to create 3D prints.
Post-acquisition, Formlabs plans to integrate the Micronics team into its own to leverage its expertise in developing SLS 3D printers. Furthermore, Formlabs intends to make SLS technology more accessible to the masses. The company also announced that it would be canceling its Kickstarter campaign, which raised more than USD 1.3 million, and refunding all backers due to the acquisition.
Analyst QuickTake: This acquisition follows a string of similar acquisitions over the last two months. These include Vision Miner’s acquisition of AddWise, an industrial 3D printer manufacturer, for USD 14 million in June and, most notably, Nano Dimension’s acquisition of all outstanding shares of Desktop Metal for ~USD 183 million earlier this month.
