Archer Aviation, an NYSE-listed eVTOL aircraft manufacturer, has signed an MoU with Dallas-based Southwest Airlines to co-develop a concept of operations for eVTOL air taxi networks in California.
Archer and Southwest Airlines intend to integrate Archer's Midnight aircraft in routes connecting California's airports with its surrounding communities. Southwest Airlines is a key player in Californian airports, operating 14 airports, including in Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, Palm Springs, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, and Fresno.
Archer announced that it would work with Southwest employees and their unions, including the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) to ensure optimized operations.
Analyst QuickTake: Archer's partnership with Southwest Airlines builds on its recent efforts to expand its eVTOL operations and services throughout the US. In June 2024 , Archer received the Part 135 Air Carrier & Operator certificate from the FA, enabling the company to begin commercial air taxi operations. This was followed by its partnership in June 2024 with Kilroy Realty Corporation to establish air taxi routes in San Francisco's Oyster Point. Archer also received USD 55 million in funding in July 2024 from Stellantis to fund the establishment of its Georgia aircraft manufacturing site.
