QuantumScape, an NYSE-listed solid-state lithium-metal EV battery developer, has partnered with PowerCo, Volkswagen Group's battery company, to industrialize QuantumScape's solid-state lithium-metal battery technology.
Under the non-exclusive license agreement, PowerCo can manufacture up to 40 GWh per year using QuantumScape's technology, with an option to expand to 80 GWh annually. The partnership aims to accelerate the industrialization of QuantumScape's technology, combining PowerCo's manufacturing expertise with QuantumScape's cutting-edge battery technology.
Furthermore, the two companies will target a product for integration in a Volkswagen Group vehicle series.
Analyst QuickTake: Prior to this, in January 2024 , QuantumScape reported that its batteries passed tests were carried out by PowerCo. The solid-state battery made by QuantumScape was able to complete 1,000 charging cycles and retain 95% capacity, exceeding industry-standard targets of 700 charging cycles and a maximum capacity loss of 20%. Therefore, an electric car with a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) range of 500–600 km could drive more than 500,000 km without a noticeable loss of range.
