Beep, an autonomous shuttle operator, has debuted a one-year pilot program to operate autonomous shuttles at the Rossmoor senior living community in partnership with Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA). The program is funded by a USD 7.5 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration.
The program aims to test the suitability of autonomous vehicles as public transit. The shuttles operate on a preset route between the community's fitness center and clubhouse on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a maximum speed of 12 mph.
The company will also collect data to potentially expand to an on-demand, ride-hail service in the future.
Analyst QuickTake: Beep has partnered with the CCTA on similar services before, launching its first autonomous shuttle program at the Bishop Ranch business park in San Ramon, California, in April 2023. In September 2023, the CCTA collaborated with May Mobility, a peer startup, to introduce an autonomous micro-transit service in Martinez, California.
