General Motors' (GM's) autonomous driving unit, Cruise, has entered a multi-year strategic partnership with ride-hailing company Uber to integrate autonomous vehicles into Uber's service in 2025.
Upon launch, Uber users can request rides in Cruise's autonomous vehicles for qualifying trips via the Uber app. The initiative will start with a dedicated number of Chevy Bolt-based autonomous vehicles.
Analyst QuickTake: This partnership between Uber and Cruise would potentially expand Uber's existing partnerships in the autonomous vehicle sector and increase the utilization of Cruise's robotaxis. Uber is already conducting fully autonomous taxi rides in Phoenix with Aplhabet’s self-driving tech unit, Waymo. Furthermore, this collaboration comes as Cruise works to revive its robotaxi business following a safety incident in October 2023. Cruise is currently conducting supervised autonomous vehicle testing in Phoenix, Dallas, and Houston, and it also plans to relaunch its robotaxi service.
