Nebraska Governor signs order to restrict cultivated meat

Regulation/policy

  • Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has signed an executive order implementing several restrictions on cultivated meat to ban these products in the state's next legislative session in 2025.

  • The order prohibits state agencies from procuring cultivated meat, mandates state contractors not to discriminate against conventional meat producers, and requires clear labeling and separate placement of cultivated meat products in stores.

  • Governor Pillen has asked the state's agriculture department to develop standards for determining when alternative proteins, including plant-based meats, are falsely labeled or advertised.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This executive order is similar to actions taken against the cultivated meat industry in other states, including the REAL Meat Act of 2024 and SF 2391 . Following multiple legislative measures in Q2 2024 , UPSIDE Foods filed a lawsuit against Florida in August 2024, citing Bill SB 1084 as unconstitutional.
