Iowa signs SF 2391 into law posing stricter labeling requirements for alternative meats and eggs

Regulation/policy

  • Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has signed SF 2391 into law, enforcing stricter labeling on plant-based and cultivated meat and eggs. The law also bars the purchase of meat and egg alternatives through federal food assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

  • Mislabeling meat and egg alternatives could lead to fines of up to USD 500 per day, with a maximum ceiling of USD 10,000. Each day the violation occurs will be considered a separate offense. Critics see this law as a possible attempt to favor traditional meat industries at the expense of emerging, environmentally friendlier alternatives.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Labeling alternative meat and egg products has been controversial in the US and several EU countries ( Italy , France ), leading to regulations and clashes between alternative food producers and the regulatory authorities. Advocates of labeling regulations claim consumers could confuse alternatives and animal products without proper labeling, while supporters of alternative foods deny these claims.
