Volkswagen rolls out ChatGPT assistant to US vehicles

Geographic expansion

  • Volkswagen, a German automaker, is introducing its ChatGPT-integrated Plus Speech voice assistant to vehicles sold in the US. The AI-powered chatbot will be available in select 2025 and 2024 models, including Jetta, Jetta GLI, and certain 2024 ID.4 models.

  • The Plus Speech voice assistant is based on AI-based voice assistant technology developer Cerence's Chat Pro product and uses OpenAI's LLM. It will be integrated into Volkswagen models equipped with the IDA voice assistant, expanding the existing system's capabilities.

  • The service is offered on a subscription basis, though some models include three years of complimentary access.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Cerence and Volkswagen first partnered in January 2024 to deliver AI-powered ChatGPT to enhance the in-car experience. The duo then deployed an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration to Volkswagen’s European lineup of vehicle models in June 2024. On a separate note, Cerence also has partnerships with other automakers, including Smart, Audi, BMW , and Zeekr , to integrate GenAI features into their vehicles.
