Satellite manufacturer Astranis and navigation startup Xona Space Systems have partnered to compete for a USD 8 million US Space Force (USSF) GPS backup system contract.
Astranis will design a network using its satellite platform and integrate it with Xona Space's positioning, navigation, and timing algorithms on software-defined radio hardware. The project aims to deploy eight small satellites by 2028, potentially expanding to 24 satellites, each costing between USD 50 million and USD 80 million.
The Resilient Global Positioning System (R-GPS) program aims to create a redundant layer within GPS infrastructure. The satellites will be capable of broadcasting both military M-Code signals and standard GPS frequencies.
Analyst QuickTake: Xona Space Systems recently established its first international office in Canada in September 2024 with plans to deploy its first small navigation satellite in low-Earth orbit by 2025.
