Serve Robotics launches droids with Level 4 autonomy

Product updates

 • Serve Robotics, a spin-off from Uber that operates delivery droids, has completed its first delivery at Level 4 autonomy (i.e., fully autonomous but limited to specific locations or conditions), marking the industry’s first delivery to occur at that level of autonomy.

 • The technology incorporated in the droid includes ultrasonics and LiDAR sensors from Ouster, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based computing from NVIDIA to detect the surroundings in real-time. Other features include automatic crash prevention, vehicle collision avoidance, and emergency braking technologies.

The company intends to roll out these droids with Level 4 autonomy to make commercial deliveries for its customers including Uber Eats in Los Angeles, California and beyond this year.

Analyst QuickTake: Today’s news marks a significant milestone for autonomous delivery droid operators as other peer companies, including Starship Technologies, Coco Robotics, and Kiwibot , all require human operators to either control the droid or at least to monitor them.
