Cell-cultivated meat technology company Luyef Biotechnologies secured USD 1.25 million in grant funding, with USD 250,000 from the Good Food Institute and USD 1 million from the Chilean Economic Development Agency.
The funding will be used to develop a sustainable and cost-efficient medium using Trichoderma and lipid-rich yeast for cell-cultivated meat production, and research on upcycling barley for Trichoderma feed to scale production.
The company is currently prototyping its first product, a bovine myoglobin-based ingredient called TAMEE (The Authentic Meat-Eating Experience), which is authorized for production and sale in Chile. Luyef also plans to expand its focus beyond cellular agriculture to serve industries like biomedicine and cosmetics.
