Redwire is a space technology company with a portfolio of space solutions, spanning from advanced spacecraft systems to space infrastructure and robotics.

Redwire offers a range of services and products, including space structures and mechanisms, robotic systems, sensors and payloads, and advanced materials. The company is also a pioneer in space manufacturing and biotechnology, focusing on developing new techniques for printing human tissues in microgravity.

Redwire announced that it would launch the first commercial greenhouse in Spring 2023 to support space exploration missions and outer space crop production research, making it the world’s first commercial greenhouse aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In September 2023 , Redwire successfully bioprinted a human knee meniscus aboard the International Space Station (ISS) using its BioFabrication Facility (BFF). The meniscus was printed with living human cells and underwent a culture process on the ISS before being sent back to Earth.

The company was formed in 2020 through the merger of Adcole Space and Deep Space Systems and has since expanded its capabilities through strategic acquisitions and partnerships.

Redwire has acquired six companies: QinetiQ Space (2022), Techshot (2021), Deployable Space Systems (2021), Oakman Aerospace (2021), ROCCOR (2020), and Made In Space (2020).

Key customers and partnerships

Redwire Space has a diverse range of customers in the space industry, including NASA, the Department of Defense, commercial space companies, and research institutions. Redwire's collaborations with its customers aim to advance space exploration, technology, and innovation, as well as contribute to the development of new biomedical therapies that benefit both space exploration and healthcare on Earth.

In August 2023, Redwire secured a USD 12.9 million NASA Tipping Point award for a lunar infrastructure prototype. The project aims to build the moon's critical infrastructure (landing pads, roads, habitat foundations, etc.)

In August 2023 , Sierra Space and Redwire partnered to develop a biotech experiment platform for commercial space stations. The module, Large Integrated Flexible Environment (LIFE), was to be launched later in the decade for commercial pharmaceutical and other biotech research.

Funding and financials

Redwire recorded revenues of USD 160.5 million and an operating loss of USD 146.5 million in 2022 (from USD 70.1 million in losses in 2021). The company’s net loss widened from USD 61.5 million in 2021 to USD 130.6 million in 2022, mainly driven by an impairment expense of USD 96.6 million.

In September 2021, Redwire went public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) called Genesis Park. This allowed Redwire to become a publicly traded company and start trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
