Munich Re

Munich Re or Muenchener Rueck Ges in Mnhn AG (FWB: MUV2) is a global insurance and reinsurance company based in Munich, Germany. The company has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since 2000. Munich Re was the largest global reinsurance provider in terms of gross written premiums (GWPs) in 2021. Its total GWPs were EUR 67.1 billion in 2022 (USD ~72 billion).

The company operates under two business segments: Reinsurance and ERGO. The Reinsurance segment primarily includes Munich Re’s conventional reinsurance services offered through its Life and Health Reinsurance and Property-casualty (P&C) Reinsurance business lines. The segment also includes the Global Specialty Insurance (GSI) division, which offers specialty primary insurance services for niche sectors such as marine, aviation, and space, among others. The ERGO segment mainly includes the operations of multiple European primary insurance companies owned by Munich Re.

Europe was Munich Re’s largest market (~49% of total GWPs in 2022), followed by North America as well as Asia and Australasia. The US was its single largest market (~28%), followed by Germany (~22%). Munich Re’s strategic plan for 2025 (“Scale, Shape, and Succeed”) focuses on organic growth in core offerings, market expansion in Germany, and profitable growth for ERGO. The plan also aims to develop new business models and innovative digital solutions, such as cyber covers and IoT business models. Munich Re has also announced its ambitions to reach net zero status by 2050.
