Libre Foods is a Spanish biotech startup that produces mycelium-based alternative meats using a fermentation process. It uses the entire fungi organism with a special focus on the root (mycelium) to develop its products which include Libre Bacon and Libre Chicken. According to the company, its products provide similar taste, texture, and nutrition as animal meat.
Funding and financials
In February 2022 , Libre Foods raised EUR 2.2 million (~USD 2.5 million) in seed funding led by Green Generation Fund, with participation from several return investors. The new funds were earmarked for scaling its mushroom bacon production and launch in Spain in 2022, with a larger European launch to follow, pending regulatory approval. Further, in December 2023 , the company received a EUR 335,000 (~USD 367,500) public research and development grant from Neotec to develop low-cost mycelium ingredients for alternative meat production.
